TWO of Calderdale's top businesses were celebrating last night after scooping awards at the Courier's first Business Awards.
Marshalls was named business of the year and department store owner Roger Harvey business person of the year.

After receiving his award at the event, held at Berties in Elland, Roger Harvey said it was the most positive thing to happen to Calderdale for years.

"It has been long overdue and it is marvellous to see businesses of all sizes recognised in this way.

"It is a reminder that there is a very vibrant business community here," he said.

Mr Harvey was overcome by emotion as he collected his award from managing partner at sponsors Chadwick Lawrence, Jeremy Garside, who said he had been the most worthy recipient.

"It is really important for business in Calderdale that the Courier has instigated these awards to remind the wider community how vibrant commerce is in the area," said Mr Harvey.

The winners were – business of the year: Marshalls; business person of the year: Roger Harvey; international business: J&C Joel.

Small to medium enterprise: Crossway Scaffolding; young business person: Claire O'Connor of Babyballet; new business: The Trading Floor.

Community business of the year: Provident Insurance; environ- mental business: InterfaceFLOR.

More than 220 guests watched as a diverse range of businesses were recognised. Element Jewellery, of Hebden Bridge, run by Caroline Kindy and her small team were applauded alongside the Halifax with its 6,000 Calderdale employees for their contribution to the prosperity of the region.

The awards will be held again next year, with our gala awards dinner on November 6.
