The finalists for young business person of the year, sponsored by the Elsie Whiteley Innovation Centre, are Paul Howcroft, of Halifax-based Vanguard, Claire O'Connor who heads babyballet, and Chris Hopkins, of Ploughcroft Building Services Limited.
Managing director Paul Howcroft's nomination showed how he had bucked the trend of the decline of the UK's automotive industry and revamped Vanguard from a traditional sub-contract company into a modern-day manufacturer.

Claire O'Connor's nomination showed her impressive entrepreneurial drive and now has a chain of franchisees of her Babyballet brand.

Chris Hopkins, managing director of Ploughcroft, was nominated for transforming the traditional building and roofing firm, making the most of niche markets and setting up a training centre.
