Solved: the mystery of Lilian's store

RECENTLY we published a plea for help from Wendy Buxton, of Sowerby Bridge, who wanted to know the location of a milliner's shop, E Garforth, where her great aunt, Lilian Gerke, worked ("Great Aunt Lilian, super seamstress", Nostalgia, April 16).

Mrs Buxton, of Ladstone Towers, received a torrent of calls from readers but – unusually for Nostalgia readers – most were wrong. Having read their copies of the local trade directory of 1936, they thought the shop was at 173 Pellon Lane, Halifax.

Mrs Buxton writes: "Thanks for publishing the article about Garforth Milliners. Most thought it to be 173 Pellon Lane after serching through the 1936 directory.

"But then someone rang who had noticed the number above the door on the photograph. It was 105, which was the number of the shop Eleanor Garforth had in Haley Hill in about 1922.

"She then had a shop in about 1931 at 47 Crown Street, then the Pellon Lane business. "The Haley Hill address sounds most feasible as Lilian lived at Woodside and started work in the early 20s. Thanks to all who called."

David Glover, of Baker Fold, Halifax, adds: "The milliner's shop pictured was at 105 Haley Hill and was run by Eleanor Garforth in the 1920s. She was born in October 1889 to William Edward Garforth, a wiredrawer, of Brewery Street, Boothtown, and his wife Mary.

"As a young woman Eleanor set up as a milliner and dressmaker in her own right, and in 1922 her business was listed as being at 105 Haley Hill, the shop in the picture.

"By 1931/2 the millinery business had moved to 47 Crown Street, and by 1936 it was at 173 Pellon Lane.

"Later in her life Eleanor moved to 16 Green Terrace Square, and she died in 1972."
