Renaissance team success: Somerset House, Halifax

We have a clear vision - why not build around it

Regarding “Streets Ahead and the library debate”.

Out of work youngsters can’t create new jobs

YOUTH unemployment is the biggest problem facing the nation. I am a typical unemployed young person facing a lifetime on the dole.

Keep Old Lane looking great!

In response to Albert Williams letter (“Clean up these roads”, Yoursay, February 12) Old Lane, Halifax is notorious for fly tipping. We also have to endure derelict buildings, a pile of rubble following the demolition of Old Lane Public House; and a burnt out car this week!

Turbines letter gets my vote

IT IS thanks to the Halifax Courier that the people of Calderdale not only get information, both local and national, but are also allowed to air their views (within reason, of course), about a subject or topic they feel strongly about.

A Henry Wadsworth and Son waggon, from about 1900

Cartwright history of Orange Box building

The ‘Orange Box’ project at Thomas Street has frequently been in the news lately (“Young people are our future: Now the Orange Box project aims to put them centre stage” 13 Jan), and is now a work in progress.

We want decisions made locally not further away

The Conservatives have come up with plans to link Calderdale up with Kirklees.

Use brown sites before damaging environment

I write to express my serious concern re the Government’s Planning Reform White Paper introducing a “presumption in favour of ‘sustainable development’”, regardless of the site of such development and its effect on the local environment.

Make it easier for people to clear waste

IS IT any wonder that fly-tipping is such a problem in our and so many other areas?

Are we the jam in Kirklees sandwich?

The Conservative’s rather vague proposals for a merging of Kirklees and Calderdale remind me of the Two Ronnies news announcement that East Sandwich is to be merged with West Ham to make East West and Ham Sandwich.

Workers will have to pay back loan money

It would seem the Labour Party is having a campaign of knocking the government in time for the council elections this year. However their choice of issues opens them up to more questions than the answers they suppose to seek.

Why are they making these changes to NHS?

Surely everyone supports the NHS? Even if you are lucky enough to enjoy perfect helath now you know it’s so important to have an NHS that looks after you when you need it.

Keep eyes fixed on floor

I have just read an article in the courier about dog fouling by Christ Church school.

Take the debate out to forums

I SPENT Tuesday night at the Town Hall listening to Cllr Barry Collins and Dr John Hargreaves give their reasons for moving or not, the Central Library.

12,500 electors - One councillor under new plan

Much will be said about the Conservative plans for Calderdale and Kirklees to be run from Huddersfield, but I want to concentrate on just one aspect, the reduction in democracy.

Bus station is like an ice box

I had occasion to go to Brighouse on Thursday morning. The bus station there was like an ice box.

Cyclists plan - you can’t be serious!

I READ Eddie Pollard’s letter about cyclists paying road tax (Yoursay, February 9) with a raised eyebrow.

£4.60 bus ticket

HI HO, hi ho, it’s off to work I go. Get on the First Bus in Elland, ask for a day rider to try save some money. It’s gone up to £4.60, which isn’t very festive of First Buses, is it? Start of a New Year and they decide to put their prices up.

Cap benefits but we will not penalise children

I see that the Tory candidate, Andrew Tagg, is once again trying to find some excuse to attack Labour.

Turbines are destroying special Calder Valley landscape

I wonder just how much the residents and councillors of the Calderdale region know what is happening to the special landscape of the upper Calder valley that is bit by bit being destroyed by, so-called domestic wind turbines.

Petition was signed by nine out of ten

On a bitingly cold Saturday morning, 1435 people signed our 2 hour petition in support of keeping Calderdale’s Central Library and Archive exactly where they are. That figure is just over 0.7% of the population of Calderdale. If that doesn’t sound very impressive, then consider that, on a national scale, it would represent around 500,000 signatures, in 2 hours. (Nationally, petitions of over 100,000, over several weeks, lead to a debate in Parliament)

Can we afford huge costs to dispose of Northgate House?

I write in the recent light of discovering that the £300,000 for this Customer first facility within the Broad Street Plaza Complex is in fact the cost of operating this facility and not the rent as initially thought.

Will Alsops plan of the PIece Hall showing potential for development around it.

Where in ‘Streets Ahead’ does it say move library?

“Deputy leader Tim Swift (Lab, Town) said the proposals were the next step in delivering “Streets Ahead” - the vision set out by Halifax Town Team and adopted by the council for reshaping the town centre over the next 25 years.” - Courier Tuesday 7 February

Community spirit in snow

I would like to say a big thank you to the wonderful people who live on Tuel Lane, Sowerby Bridge.

Will Post Office say sorry?

Over three and a half years have passed, since our campaign to retain our Post Office in West Vale failed - not that we the users of the Sub-Post Office on Saddleworth Road were ever to be listened to, despite the petition, protest meetings and contacts with Councillors and the then Calder Valley MP.

View has not changed

In reply to J Anderson’s letter on 3rd February may I point out that the Conservative Group accepted the wishes of the people in 2009 and a vote in Council to retain the Halifax Central Library in its current position was supported by all political parties, changing the position agreed in 2008 by all parties.

Cathedral invite to golden couples

I am writing on behalf of Ripon Cathedral to request your help with our hugely popular Golden Wedding Service.

Can we get updates on police appeals?

WELL done to the Courier for helping to catch the rapist by showing a picture of him a few years ago, but why don’t you do a follow up regular series of the pictures you show regularly on “do you know these people” wanted in connection with theft, etc, to see if any of them have been arrested due to the Courier photos.

Priority is given to arts over elderly and disabled

I AM writing to express my concerns that Calderdale DART may lose their funding. I was quite surprised to read in the Courier that our council considers the arts a higher priority than services for the elderly, disabled and carers.

Ignoring decline of High Street

Don’t the people advocating building new shops on Northgate read the papers or listen to the news? Shops are closing at alarming rate every week.

A lot my city could learn from Halifax

Having recently spent some time in Halifax, I sent a letter to my local paper in Derby to say how enjoyable the visit was, even in the weather conditions experienced at the time. I thought you may like to also print this letter in the Halifax Courier.

A strong case for new pool to be built in town

IN 1902, the then Elland Urban District Council held the opening ceremony for the Victoria Public Baths. This was in recognition of Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee, in 1897.

Please don’t close Elland baths

I AM reading about the closure of Elland Baths again. What a shame. I taught myself to swim at those baths in 1959-1960.

Big business is also big risk!

GAZUMPH! As usual the cost of the Piece Hall scheme is estimated to rise from £16m to £19m with little to explain why.

National libraries day protest chance

As the arguments continue about the future of our Calderdale Central Library and Archive, we are frequently approached by angry members of the public who want to know what they can do to stop the present facilities being bulldozed.

Examine your conscience

I WISH to reply to a letter, which I read with interest, headed “So many facts in favour of the new shopping centre,” from Councillor Keith Hutson (December 24). In it he gave comments and his opinions. Some of which were demeaning, to the pressure group who wish the Central Library to remain where it is.
