Get your £30 ready for ID cards
Church Hill Road Barnet Herts
ON January 25 the citizens of London learned that they would soon have the opportunity to apply for a national ID card if they so wished. This idea is a follow-on from the voluntary scheme already in place in Manchester.
The announcement was accompanied by information that the card could be used instead of a passport for travel around the EU, for example.
This idea seems to have come a long way since we were told it was vital in the fight against terrorism and fraud, although where the estimated half million illegal immigrants in London fit into the scheme is unclear.
I have always been surprised by the amount of support that is expressed for ID cards in letters to newspapers like the Courier and phone-in programmes whenever it is debated.
If the opportunity arises I will certainly be applying for one. Given the advantages, the cost of 30 seems to me to be money well spent.
The roll-out rate must mean that it will soon be available in other parts of the country as well as London and Manchester.
The people of Yorkshire should get their 30 ready before a Conservative government scraps the idea.
