Labour is tackling climate change - Tories just use gesture politics

Robinwood Terrace Todmorden

I would like to respond to the recent letter from Craig Whittaker, which falsely implies that our MP, Chris McCafferty, myself and the Energy Secretary Ed Miliband are opposed to measures to radically cut greenhouse gas emissions.

It is a real shame that Coun Whittaker is trying to reduce the serious issue of climate change to a politically-motivated daft exercise in misinformation.

He tells your readers that Chris McCafferty and the Energy Secretary recently voted against a motion urging the Govern-ment to sign up to the 10:10 campaign.

But he neglects to mention that this was a Liberal Democrat motion, best described by Labour's Des Browne as "simply empty rhetoric and posturing".

While this motion was rejected the Government's amendment was accepted without any opposition.

The result was that 20million was allocated to Government departments enabling them to make carbon reductions further and faster across their estates.

If this doesn't assure Coun Whittaker of the Government's commitment to tackling climate change then perhaps he needs reminding of Labour's record.

We were the first country in the world to set legally binding carbon targets under our Climate Change Act and we're now the world's number one offshore wind power.

The UK has been one of the few countries to beat its Kyoto targets and we're looking to create 1.2 million green jobs in the next decade.

Compare that with the Conservative party's record and he'll see a world of difference.

David Cameron's green credentials consist of cycling to work while a car follows behind and sticking a wind turbine on his house while 60 per cent of Tory councils reject wind energy applications. That's not leadership, that's just gesture politics.
