My challenge on cruelty to foxes

Spring Lane, Greetland. Gordon Thorpe challenges J. B. Thwaite to prove that hunting is cruel ("Go on: prove that hunting is cruel", Your say, January 8).

Obviously without asking a fox what it is feeling while being chased we will not scientifically be able to say. However what I will challenge Mr Thorpe to do is to meet me in a woodland or meadow of his choice. After a short start I shall release a pack of baying dogs to chase and rip apart Mr Thorpe. Using the fox-to-hound ratio I would say that either rottweilers or Irish wolfhounds would be the ideal size.

Should Mr Thorpe survive the chase he can advise those on both sides of the argument whether he did, indeed, feel any fear while jumping through hedgerows, hiding in holes and, no doubt, crying out for divine intervention.

I suspect Mr Thorpe will not accept the challenge to prove the cruelty of hunting.
