Our children deserve to be protected, so pay the price

Hirst Street Todmorden

A recent leaflet I received from Councillor Craig Whittaker is headlined 'Year for Change'.

Given the alarming state of child-care problems that have been highlighted in your newspaper this week, I can only hope this will mean a change in the person running children and young people's services at Calderdale Council.

It's time Craig Whittaker did the decent thing and stepped down. Politicians talk a lot these days about the need for accountability and transparency. In this case I can't see either.

Councillor Whittaker admits that he had been concerned for some time about child protection failings, refuses to apologise and then says he won't resign.

This is why precisely so many people dislike politicians. They never accept responsibility. Our children deserve to be protected from this kind of horrible abuse and those who fail them should pay the price.
