Report stated hunting is not cruel
Rochdale Road, Halifax I SEE that Miss C Smith is still misquoting the Burns Report in the furtherance of anti-hunting propaganda ("We should show mercy to animals", Your say, January 14).
The part she refers to actually reads that the "welfare of the hunted fox could be seriously compromised" and refers exclusively to the fox being hunted at the time.
This is a bit like saying that the humane killer used by the slaughterman compromises the welfare of the animal about to meet its end.
The hoary old chestnut about artificial earths and breeding foxes for hunting is well past its sell-by date and not worthy of further comment.
It is interesting to note that one well known animal rights/ welfare group was recently forced to admit that evidence it claimed to have regarding alleged cruelty in the way that hounds hunted and killed their quarry never existed.
To finish I would remind Miss Smith and others what Lord Burns said in summing up his report: "You ask if hunting is cruel. The short answer is 'no'." This is a matter of public record and can be checked.
