Something to be proud of

Park Avenue Elland

MEMBERS of our organisation are concerned at Calderdale Council's proposal to demolish, resite or change the contents of Halifax Central Library. There are many empty shops in the the town so why should it be necessary to remove a building of less than 30 years old when there are several mills and other buildings of over 100 years still standing? The Town Hall and Civic Theatre are two of those.

To my knowledge Halifax is the only authority in West Yorkshire that has a facility with a good lending and reference library, local history section and all archives in the same building apart from documents such as parish records which are normally kept in the country repository which in this case is Wakefield. Surely this is something to be proud of and keep for all to use and value?

It might be a good idea to house artefacts at Show Lodge Mills, but the cost of rewiring, renovating, installing lifts, stairs and hoists to provide the controlled atmosphere with no contaminants and no daylight that archives need, must be more than the cost of refurbishing the library. It is also worth noting that Shaw Lodge Mills is a good 10-minute walk from town which, for many users, could mean a second bus journey.

People from all walks of life from young families through to school children and pensioners use the library. With the close proximity of shops and a bus station it is much easier for everybody to borrow a book, research a subject, use a computer or trace their ancestry without making more than one bus journey, which is what could happen in some of the other authorities.
