Support from other clamp victims
Sunny Mount Hipperholme
THIS is in reply to the letter of Hamish McDougal, published in the Courier on Saturday, June 27.
Sue, my partner and I absolutely respect the right of the Imperial Crown Hotel to do what they wish on their own land. Sue made the mistake of parking in their car park on June 13.
She admits her mistake, but it was not a criminal act. After being bullied, threatened and fined, she will not be apologising and I don't blame her.
More to the point, I will defend her from anyone who bullies or threatens her, which is what I was doing when I turned up to pay her release fee and got clamped myself. Mr McDougal is remiss in failing to mention this second clamping, which is the whole reason for my protest.
George McDicken, the clamper he employs, told me that he was clamping me for "being a nuisance".
I am surprised that Corus Hotels link themselves so firmly with George McDicken, the clamper. A visit to "carstoppers george mcdicken" on the web would explain his past. It seems to me, that car clampers are the most hated people in the UK and some of that disdain must rub off on the people who employ them.
I agree with most of the points in Mr McDougal's letter, the exception being....
1. The clamping warning signs are inadequate. I have now proved beyond doubt that by putting a good warning sign at the car park entrance, advantage is not taken.
2. GMD do not operate within the law. I witnessed Mr McDicken carrying a victim plus child in a two seater van, presumably to the cash machine.
3. Mr McDougal states: "There is more to Mr Wharton's story than he is telling."
This is not true. My story has been accurately and completely reported in the Courier.
If Mr McDougal feels that there is an omission, then he must say what it is.
Since starting my protest, I have had tremendous support and with the help of the Courier I have met other clamp victims seeking a fairer system.
As a result there is now a group of us who are prepared to share information and help other victims who feel to be unfairly penalised.
