Warnings overCO gas danger
The Parade, Claygate, Surrey
Thank you very much for your great article about the courage of Sharon Wood and Neil Shepherd, who tragically lost their young children to carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning in Corfu in 2006 ("'Don't pay the price we did for not knowing'", Courier, July 10).
They, with their partners, Paul Wood and Ruth Beatson, attended our event at the House of Lords to publicise our charity poster competition for students. All details of how to enter are on our website at www.co-gassafety. co.uk/competition.html. The competition closes on August 15.
On the website is a booklet full of amusing pictures kindly drawn free for us by children's illustrator and CO victim John O'Leary.
Thank you also for making the point that it is almost impossible to obtain a test of an appliance, cooker, heater, boiler etc, for carbon monoxide, which cannot be found using human senses.
Your readers might be interested to know that the Health and Safety Commission recommended that the gas emergency service had and used equipment to test for CO in 2000 but the Government failed to implement this.
The HSC also recommended a levy on the hugely wealthy gas suppliers to pay for raising awareness of the dangers of CO and for research.
It is therefore particularly scandalous that we, a tiny charity, run almost entirely by volunteers, are still underwriting the remaining costs of this poster competition. We are very grateful to the sponsors we do have. We still need about 7,000 because the House of Lords event cost us a further 3,000 in travel expenses, hotel expenses for the parents, further leaflets etc.
Why didn't the industry run a poster competition years ago? Why are there no prime-time TV warnings?
