A cruel game or a bit of fun?

Ferrets are, without doubt, robust creatures with a fearsome reputation and teeth to match.
The late Richard Whiteley would testify to that when asked about the occasion one savaged him live on air on Calendar.
However, according to those in the know, once they have made your acquaintance, you have a friend for life.
Ferrets, they say, make excellent pets and are by all accounts extremely playful.
To some people that might be the image that came across in footage posted on You Tube earlier this week when local people were shown playing "skittles" using ferrets as balls.
The location was Halifax YMCA where the two people taking part worked.
It all looked pretty straightforward. A triangle of small empty plastic pop bottles were set up before a ferret was propelled across the shiny surface of the floor towards them.
The footage was, it will come as no surprise to learn, quickly removed from the website as an animal-cruelty row began to escalate.
Those involved claimed it was all harmless fun and the ferrets, far from being distressed, loved playing the games.
The RSPCA inspectors poised to investigate may take a different view.
There is a fine line between playing with an animal and exploiting it.
But while we are assured the ferrets remain in good health, that line appears to have been crossed in this instance.
Maybe the people who derived so much pleasure from this should try being catapulted across the floor into a stack of beer barrels and see how they like it.
Not very much, it would be safe to bet.

How can andrew say he didnt know he was been filmed when he looked straight at the filmer of the so called "fun" whom say's to him "i have evidance for the RSPCA" Dose this mean that if he did know he was been filmed then he would'nt have done it because he know's it's wrong!!!! I agree slide his ass down the road into a pile of barrels.

ferrets are humans too!!,

really, they are only sliding. Maybe over time they would get bald underneath. Once the sport has a proper governing body maybe they could look at knee pads and helmets ??

for a start why would you slate your own brother like that!
next, i know the ferrets and the girl that owns them. so let me just say those are the most looked after animals you could possibly find!
she even takes them on walks & lets them roam around like ferrets should, so theyre not cooped up like so many others are!
she adores them, they are older than 4-6 months old theyre more like 2years old!!
if the ferrets were hurt they would not get up and want to play anymore.
i think this story is ridiculous to be honest, its completely been blown out of preportion and the courier and Suzzanne Rutter is to blame for it all.
you have made a lovely girl feel awful about a harmless game, why dont you try write something more useful about how drugs are being sold to school pupils, or the hundreds of people that are driving around with no car insurance or licences!!
you can clearly see the ferrets are not being "flung", just gently released so they can slide along the floor and have some fun!
To me and a lot of other people the courier has become a storyless waste of halifax's time and money, the only way it would be worth reading if it was a weekly paper (like the one in brighouse)this crummy excuse of a story is just one of many examples which proves that the courier is NOT WORTH READING. All it needs is a red top on the front and a new name, along the lines of 'UTTER RUBBISH!!!'.

I know for a fact that all those ferrets are volunteers and like nothing better than sliding round all evening for the diversion and pleasure of the moronic classes. I did say earlier that they are the most intelligent of creatures, and have acted as phone a friends for many contestants on millionaire, thus raising large amounts of money for the undeserving classes.

the video that is being reported is being blown all out of preportion and is a petty time wasting story, the ferrets in question(reported to the Evening Courier) WERE enjoying themselves (but the Evening Courier chose NOT to let the public see the whole story!!)
link to 'ferret bowling' (contains bad language) these are the sort of people who should be reported for their ferret bowling because of the content of the 'full' video.....
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d7u6_-d0ySc

P.S....i wonder what excuse the Courier would give as to why they had to edit and shorten videos!!!
