Of all the regeneration proposals for Halifax, perhaps the most exciting is the bid for a university.
It would have a huge impact on the town - indeed the whole of Calderdale would gain a major benefit.

Universities attract, nurture and retain talent and reports have shown they help create a highly skilled workforce for the local business communi
ty, stimulate entrepreneurship and boost innovation and competitiveness.

The students themselves would give the town a lift and many businesses would see an upturn if there was a town centre campus.

Not least, Halifax becoming a university centre would underpin the Broad Street scheme and give added impetus to the drive to develop the Piece Hall, particularly as an evening entertainment venue.

The timing could be perfect. At the moment hundreds of local youngsters have to travel to other cities to continue their education. While some prefer to do this – many would like to stay in their own homes while studying.

The campaign for Calderdale is up and running with significant backing from Leeds Metropolitan University and detailed discussions are now taking place.

When the Government gets down to making a decision on the bid, it should not only take into account the boost it will give the district but also see how much Halifax has to offer.

It could make a great university town.
