THE sight of Gordon Brown at the HBOS offices in Halifax was heartlifting and sent out a clear message to the 6,500 people who work here that they have not been forgotten.
His demeanour, upbeat, even buoyant, will have given everyone worried for their jobs ahead of the Lloyds TSB takeover a real lift.
It was critically important that the PM saw for himself the high calibre of the HBOS workforce, the finely-honed operation and hi-tech hub in Trinity Road.
London may be the home of Lloyds TSB and the heart of national and world finance, but the banking pulse beats strong in Calderdale too.
Now that Mr Brown has seen that for himself he can help MPs Linda Riordan and Christine McCafferty impress upon Sir Victor Blank and his colleagues that it would be sheer folly to make any plans for the future that did not involve the workforce and infrastructure already in place in Halifax.
"This is a very hi-tech operation with very highly skilled workers and we need to do everything we can to help the workforce here," said the Prime Minister.
Fine words. We could not have put it better.
Nobody is naive enough to think there will not be job losses. But there must be rationality in rationalisation.
So far the Lloyds TSB hierarchy have failed to visit Halifax.
But now the message that the HBOS workforce is ready, willing and able to carry on will reach them from the highest political voice in the land.
And that really is good news.
