Hats off to the Womens Royal Voluntary Service which celebrates its 70th anniversary this year.
And to Gillian Highley and her local volunteers who have given such wonderful service to the people of Calderdale over the decades.

It is, of course, a far different organisation to the one which began at the behest of the Dowager Marchioness of Reading in 1938 to recruit women for the Air Raid Precautions Services.

It has earned a huge reputation for dispensing no-nonsense, practical help to the needy.

Gillian, who received an MBE for her services two years ago and has been involved for more than 40 years, recalls how she and her colleagues helped calm hysterical teenagers at the Bay City Rollers concert in Halifax.

"You make some good friends and you do make a difference to people's lives," she says.

Happy birthday and may there be many more.
