An inspiring outlook for all

There are few finer local views than the one looking out from Beacon Hill.
First, the panoramic spread of Halifax, then the picturesque Calder Valley and finally, in the distance, the high, desolate Pennines in the direction of the Lancashire border.
It is an outlook that is both inspiring and breathtaking all at one go.
For walkers to reach Beacon Hill's solitudinous vantage point is not easy. There is an existing footpath but it is overgrown and steep.
Consequently the nearest many people have been to one of Halifax's most recognisable landmarks is looking at a photograph.
All that is about to change as plans are now at an advanced stage to build a footpath linking Halifax centre, Beacon Hill and beyond it, a newly restored Shibden Hall and its magnificent park.
While the initial idea for a cable car rise was seen as ambitious, out of it has come something that will be a lasting asset, not only for Halifax but Calderdale as a whole.
Not only will a fully maintained pathway from Barrowclough Lane to Shibden Hall Road encourage thousands more people to take in this most bracing of views, but it will be wonderful for anyone wishing to keep trim and lose a few pounds.
Especially with the walk uphill.
