Good show by top cop Norman

There is never a policeman around when you want one, they say. And people regularly complain about police response times.
But when security guard Amer Nawaz called for help in Brighouse, West Yorkshire's Chief Constable Sir Norman Bettison was at his side within a minute. You cannot get a better service than that.
And Sir Norman did not disappoint. He helped chase down a gang who had been reported for drinking and causing trouble. One man was arrested.
It was probably just an all too common piece of aggressive behaviour by a group of youths – though the fact that a knife was found later in the area is a reminder of the real dangers that lurk on the streets of Britain these days.
In any case, this was good work. If only it was typical of the response our police could give to members of the public when they called for help.
Visits by chiefs can be mere morale-boosting efforts or even publicity stunts. But Sir Norman's short stint in Calderdale gave him a great insight into two very clear facts.
One is how intimidating public areas can be and the other is how the quick appearance of police on the scene can take away the danger.
The top cop has got the message. He has recognised the work being done in Calderdale to get officers out and about in the community. That way they get to know the area and the issues and people get to know them.
And if they are out and about there is more chance they can react quickly and be there when we need them.
Just like Sir Norman was.
