Calderdale is making good progress in upgrading the district's schools.
Through the private finance initiative, the district was able to build four new secondary schools.
That project is now complete and students have had a year learning in their new, bright, modern surrounds.
Now it is the turn of some of our primary
schools to benefit.
The area will receive £3-5million of Government funding every year over the next 14 years, which is a huge boost. Four or five primary schools in the most deprived areas are likely to be replaced, with nearly half – or 38 schools – being refurbished or remodelled over the 14 year period.
Some of these schools were built well into the last century and the buildings pose all kinds of problems. This money can make a great deal of difference.
It is vital that our children enjoy attending school and the fabric of the building can help towards creating a welcoming, friendly environment.
By spending money on our schools we can also make sure they meet the needs of new teaching techniques and provide added facilities for instance for art and sport.
Not least, the improvements will take away the problems that old, decaying building present for teachers, heads and governors.
This is a great opportunity which will benefit thousands of Calderdale children over the next decade.
