WHEN it recently celebrated its 60th birthday there was no doubt the National Health Service still had its fair share of problems.
Superbugs, scandals and waiting lists are unfortunately all too common.
And yet the NHS remains largely the envy of the world and is still greatly cherished in its own homeland.
There is one reason above all others for that – the hard work, dedication and commitment of people like Rosalie Curran and Pauline Pilcher, the mother and daughter who have notched up more than 70 years of nursing in Calderdale between them.
They, like so many others who work tirelessly on the front line of our hospital wards and doctors surgeries, have dedicated their lives to helping other people in times of need for what is often a none too princely wage.
They have done it because they care and because they want to make a difference.
Things have changed in their time, they say, but the attitude of the staff remains the same: “They’ll go that extra mile to help you,” says Mrs Pilcher. And we are certain she is right.
Much needs to be done to improve the NHS as it is transformed into a truly 21st century institution. But it is staff like these two who will ensure the service, despite its problems, continues to remain a British jewel.
