The Courier has run two campaigns in recent years on the subject of transport.
Just last month our Let's Get Moving campaign provided a thorough overall health check on our local transport links by road and rail.
We tested the suitability and usefulness of our train services, bus routes, parking and traffic flow – and we found them to be sadly inadequate.
We showed how Halifax and Calderdale are shockingly badly provided-for in comparison with our neighbours.
In the current political parlance, our services and road links were found to be unfit for purpose.
Not only the big cities of Leeds, Bradford and Manchester, but other smaller centres of population such as Huddersfield and Wakefield have road and rail links to put ours to shame.
We demonstrated how these poor transport links were hampering regeneration and economic progress in our towns and valleys.
Earlier, our On Track campaign called for a direct rail link from Halifax and Brighouse to London.
That too stressed the economic handicap we face when competing against similar-size towns with much quicker links to the capital.
We have also stressed the economic importance of opening up competition for different and smaller train companies to run services on the profitable East Coast Main Line instead of allowing a near-monopoly in the hands of first GNER then National Express.
The original bid for a Halifax service failed. But the proposal from rail company Grand Union is back on the agenda and a decision expected this summer.
We hope the rail regulator gets the decision right this time.
