Keeping a perspective over Sita

There is something a little unpleasant in the tone of some of the critisicm levelled against Sita, the firm newly in charge of our dustbin collections.
This is the company, readers will recall, that even before it emptied a single Calderdale bin managed to stick its head into a hornet's nest by excluding the much-loved community recyclers Kerbside from its game plan.
Of course, this was rash and politically clumsy, as we have already suggested. Of course, the decision should be revoked and an accommodation found to keep Kerbside involved.
But to some critics, Sita (UK) are guilty of two far graver offences – not being British and preferring to make money than lose it.
So far as we are aware, neither is a criminal offence. Even in these straitened times.
Yet too many attacks on Sita seem to dwell on the twin facts that Sita is French-owned and makes a profit. Some of the more misguided jibes even aspire to the Alf Garnett school of argument about "foreigners taking our jobs".
All of which overlooks that the Sita labour force is recruited locally and that many staffed worked for previous contractor Focsa. A Spanish company, as it happens.
Sita undoubtedly keeps shooting itself in the foot. Its latest goof involves confusion over garden waste collections. Its public relations are conducted at arm's length with a ham fist. Most importantly, it must mend its relationship with Kerbside.
But please, let's not add nationality and profitabily to a trumped-up charge sheet.
