THERE is something wrong when disabled children in Calderdale are having to wait as long as two years to be assessed for equipment and alterations at home that are vital to their development and wellbeing.
Especially when the needs of adults with disabilities are dealt with in around 24 days.

There is something equally wrong when the chairwoman of the committee overseeing the needs of children and young people demands to know how this situation has been allowed to develop. If she does not know, who does?

The disabled children's team is understaffed and under-funded, there is only one full time occupational therapist and eight children are waiting for standing frames because they are being rationed.

At least everyone is now aware of this dire situation, though it makes it no less a scandal.

Parents have enough to cope with without being denied the tools to allow their children to lead enhanced lives and develop to their best potential.

The last thing they need is to be forced to hold fund-raising sessions or to have to go cap in hand to charities and trusts to get what they need.

A review of the situation will now take place and it cannot happen soon enough.

By the time it is completed next July, councillors must make absolutely certain all these issues have been resolved and that no more unnecessary agony is piled on people who have enough to cope with already.
