New work to improve the Victoria Theatre is welcome news. Calderdale's prime live entertainment centre has gone from strength to strength in recent years and now is the right time to invest in its future.
The new sloping floor in the stalls will make viewing much better from the back seats – one of the major problems with the theatre since it first opened as a concert hall in 1901.

Linked to better seating, this £500,000 work should give the theatre a tremendous boost and make visits to the Victoria a better experience for the whole audience.

But we hope this essential work does not jeopardise the recent reputation the Victoria has gained as a great venue for rock music.

Some of the visiting acts have really put Halifax on the map – Ian Brown, Ocean Colour Scene, Morrissey, the Charlatans – and people have gone away saying it was a super place to watch and perform.

Of course the last thing these fans want is a seat! They are not too worried about a slope either. With luck, the work will take this into consideration and, while most of us will be happy we now have a comfortable seat with a good view, the Victoria will continue to rock.
