Shadow of diabetes hangs over 1,000 here

In the last 12 months more than 100 people have died of diabetes in Calderdale.
As many as 7,500 people are suffering from the condition. By 2010 the predicted numbers of those affected will have increased to 10,000. The jump is more than significant and one that poses an alarming problem.
Diabetes happens when the body becomes unable to break down glucose, causing the blood-sugar level to increase.
Like other conditions the sooner it is detected the quicker a patient can be stabilised. The longer it is left, the more danger there is.
This is why Calderdale Council's health and social care scrutiny panel is now looking at ways diabetes is detected and treated.
Nationally, millions are believed to have the illness without realising it. The figure in Calderdale is around 1,000.
No effort must be spared to find these people, for their own wellbeing.
