THERE is no doubt the wonderfully conceived Totally Locally Campaign struck a chord with people in Calderdale.
And made them think twice about where they did their shopping.
While still in its infancy, the campaign has undoubtedly helped the small local retailers who rely on people dropping in from time to time rather than spending all their money in supermarkets or on shopping expeditions to other towns and cities.
According to Totally Locally, if everyone in Calderdale spent £5 in a local shop each week, it would collectively bring in £40 million to the local economy over 12 months.
And that, as everyone will appreciate, would be a major boost in these financially challenging times.
Now organisers have come up with another thoroughly ingenious idea that interestingly relies not just on the shopper parting with his or her hard-earned cash, but the retailer as well.
Fiver-Fest will invite retailers to put together special offers for £5.
It could be a selection of meat, a fruit and veg box or a bouquet of flowers.
The job of persuading people to spend at least some money in local shops has to be a two-way street and this initiative appears to offer the best of both worlds.
Now it just needs shopkeepers to sign up – and for customers to make it worth their while.
