View of town to change forever

News of the Broad Street Plaza redevelopment gets more exciting by the day.
After years of paper pushing, firm plans were laid on the table last year and planning permission granted for a spectacular development with new homes, retail outlets, entertainment and a raft of car parking.
Now the original plans will be revised to accommodate a 100-bedroom hotel – the biggest ever built in the town – and resubmitted to the council for approval in July.
Halifax is already served by several well-established hotels, which are of huge benefit to the overall economy of the town. A new establishment will only add to that.
For now, it is unclear if it will be a traditional or budget-style hotel.
What this shows, however, is the huge amount of interest the Broad Street Plaza development has created.
The build, which will include apartments, a long-overdue cinema complex, a bowling alley, bingo hall, restaurants and a 4,298-space car park, will also dramatically improve the vista in an important area of the town that has become unattractive and run down.
There is much to be said for first impressions. At the moment anyone approaching Halifax across North Bridge is confronted first by the majestic Town Hall buildings and a barren wasteland opposite.
With any luck that may change forever by Christmas when work is expected to begin.
