It was a proud moment for young Jennie Abel when she was invited to Buckingham Palace for a special commendation.
Jennie was only 11 years old and a first aider for only four months when tragedy struck at a horse show she was attending on duty in Northowram, Halifax.

But she showed courage and calmness beyond her years in helping those who tried in vain to save accident victim Kay Sutcliffe.

Though their fight was lost, it is reassuring to know that youngsters like Jennie are continuing to join the ranks of the St John Ambulance.

The life-saving skills she learns as a cadet could one day prove most important for her – and someone else who might need her assistance.

Well done, Jennie, for giving up your time to acquire such a valuable talent. You thoroughly deserved your award from the Princess Royal.
