There was plenty of local interest in the World Cup which has just finished, with the exploits of new Fax recruit Bob Beswick plus Scott Grix, Liam Finn, Ged Corcoran and Ben Fisher.
But you have to go all the way back to 2000 to find a Halifax player appearing for England in this competition and even that was a slightly debatable statistic.
He was Paul Rowley, who had moved from the Shay to Huddersfield at the end of the season in slightly acrimonious fashion and who therefore classed himself as a Giants player!
John Bentley and Karl Harrison both played for England in 1995 as they reached the final, in which the latter played.
"Rhino" had been in imperious form as England inched past a Welsh side which included Martin Hall and Kelvin Skerrett at Old Trafford in the semi-finals and played in the final at Wembley which Australia won by eight points.
But you have to go back a long way to find the two Halifax players who actually earned a winners' medal in this competition.
The first one was held in France in 1954 and apparently was something of a non-event as far as some players were concerned.
There had just been a long Lions tour of Australia and a lot of those tourists were unavailable for a variety of reasons, but prop John Thorley wasn't bothered by that.
In later life he used to tell some horror stories of how the makeshift squad had just a couple of training sessions over here prior to departure and in France there was at least one occasion where they trained with a rolled up coat because no balls were available.....but they won!
The only other member, with Thorley, of the exclusive World Cup winners medal club whilst a Thrum Haller is hooker John Shaw, "Joby" to his mates.
Fax have always seemed to have good hookers over the decades but this lad tends to get overlooked despite the fact that for four or five years he was as good as anyone in the country in the number nine shirt.
It was a hard shirt to fill when he arrived at the club in November 1958, 50 years ago this month, because the previous incumbent had been Alvin Ackerley.
Ackerley had actually been selected for the 1954 World Cup but had declined after, for some improbable reason, he had been overlooked for the previous Lions tour.
He went Down Under in 1958 but, like so many tourists, was disgruntled at club level on his return, according to some sources allegedly due to the tenancy of his club house!
There was a major fall-out with legendary hardman coach "Dolly" Dawson which eventually saw them both depart Thrum Hall.
Fax had to do something to plug the gap and splashed out £2,100, no insignificant amount in those days, for Shaw from Wakefield Trinity.
Those were the days of unlimited tackles and contested scrums, of which there could be plenty in some games.
Shaw probably felt that he had fallen on his feet when his props on debut were Thorley and the fearsome Jack Wilkinson, and he went on to make 167 appearances for Fax.
In the 1960 World Cup, played just on a four country league table basis, he played in the win over France and then the decisive 10-3 victory over Australia at Odsal.
