Gareth's secret wedding

AND yet another celebrity keeps us in the dark
This time it's former Pop Idol runner-up Gareth Gates of Bradford.
The 23-year-old got hitched last month after a so called "secret" wedding at Belvoir Castle, Leicestershire. It was kept hush-hush apparently, because Gareth and his new bride, 33-year-old dancer Suzanne Mole had sold the rights to OK! magazine. Which means if you want to see pictures of the big day you have to splash out £2.95. A bit unfair to the thousands of grannies on a pension whose votes helped give Gareth his big break.
I'm disappointed with Gareth for another reason. He is proud of his Yorkshire roots, but chose to get married in another county.
Gareth hit the big time in 2002 and went on to have four number one hits and sell 3.5 million records worldwide. His musical career has, however, stalled since then.
The magazine has devoted 26 pages to the flash wedding, but there has been hardly any mention in local or national newspapers. The wedding had everything from celebrity guests to a bucking bronco and wild karaoke. And both Gareth and Suzanne sang at the evening event for their 300-plus guests who, I'm told, included a handful of Calderdale friends.
One local woman who got a look in was designer Helen Doyle of Northowram, Halifax, who owns her own card and wedding stationery company, Gibson-Doyle. Helen supplied all the silver and white invitations, reply cards, order of service and menu and place cards for the big day and says the couple were wonderful to work with.
"Suzanne came over to Northowram several times and I met most of the family. It was one of the most exciting weddings I have worked on," she told me.

Your report sounds very much like sour grapes to me. Gareth may hail from Yorkshire, but Suzanne doesn't. Isn't it normal for a wedding to be staged in the vicinity of the Bride's home. The fact they chose to have a neutral setting says more for Gareth's affection to Yorkshire than you are implying. And the fact they used local people to make their invitations and to work on Gareth's Mother and sisters hair shows they have tried hard to include every connection with their roots. How lovely to hear all the people Gareth & Suzanne worked closely with to organize their big day saying how nice they were to work with. Not that anyone should be surprised by that.
As for people having to pay £2.99 to see pictures of their wedding, we should be only too pleased that they have allowed us to see any at all. They are a private couple after all and would probably deep down have preferred to keep it all private.
When are people going to stop sniping at this very nice young man and give him a little credit for once. I'm sure most people would agree he's raised the profile of Yorkshire hugely. He shouldn't be made to feel that he owes the rest of his life to his homeland any more than any other person who moves away from their birthplace. What is so wrong in him making a life for himself and his wife wherever he chooses. I'm sure he'll still return up north whenever possible.

Give him a break for goodness sake.

I agree with the above comment. What a silly, bitter and twisted article. Was it Gareth's fault that OK magazine costs £2.95? And was it only grannies that voted for him on Pop Idol.

Gareth Gates is an admirable young man. Not only has he worked on his own speech in that now he can speak very clearly but he has qualified as a teacher and has helped scores of other stammerers with their speech also. Credit should be given where credit is due.

It seems that Yorkshire people are unduly touchy (and before I get any brickbrats I am Yorkshire born and bred myself). Gareth and Suzanne probably chose to get married in the middle of England because it would give easy access to people both from the South of England and the North.

Would it not have been generous to wish Gareth and Suzanne happiness and to wish them well in their future life together.

Sorry you couldn't find it in your heart to do this.

P.S. Did it make you feel big to rain on Gareth Gates'
parade?

I think Yorkshire should be proud of Gareth - as he is clearly proud of his Yorkshire roots. However, the first poster is right, its the bride's perogative where they marry, so why on earth should it be Yorkshire?

Good to see local businesses doing well out of it and obviously getting very excited about their role.

The pictures were lovely to see, people interviewed about the wedding afterwards had a great time and I for one wish them all the very best. Shame your paper couldn't do the same.
