It's a New Year and a new challenge for Emmerdale actress Verity Rushworth who was in Calderdale this week - VERITY Rushworth has a dream.
And that dream is that one day she will land a part where she gets to dress up and look really sexy and glamorous.
Verity, a self-confessed "girlie girl" has spent the last 11 years in wellies and jeans (not to mention a police uniform) as Donna Windsor-Dingle in ITV soap Emmerdale.
But at the end of this month she is waving goodbye to the Dales and the programme that has made her a household name, heading instead for the West End stage to star in the hit musical Hairspray.
Verity, who is 23 and hails from Bradford, is playing the part of Penny Pingleton, who is the best friend of the show's main character Tracy Turnblad. "Penny is a bit of a geek. She is bespectacled and frumpy and can't dance to save her life," says Verity who wears a wig for her new role and is now learning to speak with an American accent.
Geeky clothes aside, Verity couldn't be happier with her new adventure because she has always wanted to do musical theatre and one of her ambitions is to do Broadway.
"I started in Emmerdale when I was 12 and have loved every minute of it. But in recent years I've wanted to take a break and work in the theatre," says Verity who can sing and dance and has Halifax solicitor Chris Haddock to thank, in part, for getting her career off the ground.
Chris has a part-time job as a voice coach with a Leeds stage school and worked with Verity as a youngster. The two have always kept in touch and last week she was in Calderdale to support something close to Chris's heart – Luddenden Foot recycling company Kerbside which is threatened with closure.
Verity is a keen recycler and has a soft spot for this area. Her mum, Fiona, used to work for Calderdale Council and one of her favourite places to visit is the Piece Hall in Halifax. She also has lots of friends living in the town.
She has already filmed her final episodes for Emmerdale – she is last seen on our screens on January 30 – but her contract doesn't allow her to reveal what befalls her.
Fans of the soap will know that Donna has been involved in one of the major storylines in the past few months, which has involved a murder and her having an affair. All she will say is that the door has been left open for her to return and the actor she will miss the most is Mark Charnock who plays her husband, Marlon Dingle.
Verity, who is single, is exchanging her Leeds home for an apartment in London and faces weeks of strenuous rehearsals before her first stage performance on February 2.
She says while she used to be a night owl and liked to party in her younger days, she is now a lot more sensible and prefers to spend her money on property rather than alcohol. She owns two properties in Leeds.
Hairspray is one of her favourite musicals. It's enjoying a hugely successful revival on Broadway and arrived in London's West End in 2007. Set in 1960's Baltimore, Hairspray is based on the 1988 John Waters film of the same name and follows the fortunes of Tracy Turnblad, a big girl with big hair and an even bigger heart whose lifetime dream is to dance.
Away from work, Verity loves to look glamorous in her Jimmy Choo shoes and slinky dresses and says attending the British Soap and National Television Awards gives her the chance to look the part. Her only complaint is her slim boyish figure. She'd love to be more curvaceous.
