SHE has been showing women how to look chic and stylish for years.
But now style and image consultant Natalia Colman has a new string to her bow – teaching women how to make their own stunning pieces of jewellery.
Natalia uses a unique new product from Japan called silver clay, which can be moulded by hand, then fired in a kiln.
It only came on to the market seven years ago but is proving hugely popular across the world.
Natalia, who was trained down south by Melanie Blaikie, a jewellery designer who has created designs for Tiffany and Asprey, has set up her own business Silver Clay Creations.
As well as making jewellery for herself and others she runs workshops from her home in Skircoat Green, Halifax, and says she is the first person in the north of England offering silver clay classes.
Natalia decided to make her own jewellery when she couldn't find anything she liked in the shops or online.
She came across silver clay by accident and says she has been in love with it ever since. She calls it posh plastic.
"It is the most amazing product and working with it is addictive, empowering and very soothing. The beauty of it is that you can create your own individual piece of precious metal jewellery and have fun in the process." She takes her inspiration from nature and then gives her pieces a contemporary twist.
"I like chunky statement pieces, but it is so versatile.
"You can make just about anything from it like earrings, pendants, rings, brooches, charms and cufflinks."
The clay, which is a combination of water, binders and very fine particles of sliver, comes in packets and can be mixed with certain gemstones. Jewellery lovers can have pieces they make hallmarked, and many sell them on in galleries or at craft shows.
Natalia sells jewellery made by herself and some of her students, as well as doing commissions. Prices start from £7 for a silver charm while bigger pieces can hit the £100 mark.
She does introductory and advanced workshops and limits numbers to five so that students get individual support and guidance. The introduction workshop gives beginners the chance to make three different pieces of jewellery which they keep.
The advanced workshop is for those who want to extend their knowledge and includes more complex skills such as ring-making, setting stones in silver pieces, mould-making, oxidising and reproducing a leaf using clay paste.
Prices are £85 and £95 which includes lunch. Natalia says workshops are good for hen parties or as a gift, and people who want to continue with their new hobby at home can buy everything they need from her website www.silverclay
creations.co.uk
She keeps in touch with former students through the Silver Clay Circle she has set up. Members meet at her home every six weeks to make jewellery and learn about the latest techniques.
Natalia is attending the World Metal Clay Conference in Chicago in July and says she will be going to lots of workshops and bringing back new ideas that she will pass on to students and the circle.
Her workshops run throughout the year. Anyone who would like more details can contact her on 07775 932782 .
