NOT many pubs can boast of owning their own cattle.
But the Jack O'Mitre, on the edge of the Pennine moors overlooking Halifax, can.
The pub has been run for the past five years by farmer Stuart Gledhill, his wife Joanne, Stuart's sister Cath Haggis, and her partner Martin Evans, and is something of a magnet for foodies from both side of the Pennines.
That's because all the food is sourced within a 10-mile radius. The beef and lamb comes from Stuart's farm, the pork and milk from a neighbour's farm, the ice-cream from Just Jenny's at Barkisland, Halifax, and the desserts (which are truly scrumptious) are home made at a baker's in Meltham, Huddesfield.
The old coaching house has been feeding and watering weary travellers for decades and has an interesting history. It sits on the A640 trans-Pennine road between Huddersfield and Rochdale and was a stopping-off point for workers moving their wool from one side of the Pennines to the other.
"It had rooms and was known as the House of Entertainment. But it's not the sort of entertainment people might imagine. It was a bit of a circus house and put on shows where the animals and birds entertained," says Stuart, who was brought up in Scammonden and has been drinking in the pub since he was a teenager.
How the pub got its name is another talking point. There are lots of versions but the most popular one, according to Stuart, is that it is named after a local called Jack who used to call at the pub for a stout when it was closed and being renovated. There was a crown green bowling green where the pub car park now is and the mitre was taken from that.
The pub attracts its fair share of walkers and bird watchers as well as couples who fancy a run out and want to soak up the views. On a clear day you can see Stoodley Pike from the beer garden.
Regulars rave about the pub's steaks as well as Jack classics like Jack Chicken (chicken breast in a homemade bacon, tomato and herb sauce, topped with mozzarella); Jack Pie (steak and mushroom pie with chips and mushy peas); home-made lasagne, mushroom stroganoff, duo of salmon and haddock with prawn sauce, new potatoes and salad and cajun or poached fresh salmon salad.
There is a specials board that changes every three to four weeks plus steak and fish nights. Tuesday and Thursday for steak, and Wednesday for fish. You get two steaks and a bottle of wine for a set price (depending on which steaks you choose) and this is what we went for.
We started with piri-piri tiger prawns on garlic bread followed by two sirloin steaks and one surf and turf (home-battered scampi with rump steak). The sirloins were cooked to perfection and oh so tasty, especially with a home-made peppercorn sauce. The prawns were also mouth-watering and the only let down was the rump steak. Not medium rare as requested and nowhere near as succulent as the other two steaks. The chocolate Malteser torte and jam roly-poly more than made up for it, however, and the bill was a steal – just under £50 for three meals.
The kitchen is run by Andrew Radcliffe, Richard Holmes, Angela Gaunt and James Gledhill. According to Stuart, Andrew, who has worked at the pub for the last 18 months, is a talented chef who has made a huge difference.
If you are just popping in for a drink and are in celebratory mood, try the Lagache-Lecourt Champagne at £25 a bottle. Stuart says it is relatively unknown but is every bit as good as Moet and Chandon.

About 14 years ago this place did a large yorkshire pudding filled with slices of roast beef with onion gravy, wow! it was good!

I go here loads, it is one of our favourite places to eat and the staff couldn't be nicer. Phil, the roast beef is still gorgeous!
