Review: Theos Greek Restaurant

GREEK restaurants are generally few and far between and for our dining experience, my partner and I went for the renowned Theos eatery which is above a charity shop opposite the Bridge Gate car park, In Hebden Bridge.
It was set up 16 years ago by Nick Theodoulou and is as popular today as ever it was.
To be honest, first impressions were a bit disconcerting because while the place is cosy and welcoming, these days it is looking rather tired.
But that is about to change as work is well under way on an rear extension which will house a new kitchen, bar, lounge and toilets.
We booked at the last minute and probably got the worst table in the house – right outside the kitchen and toilet doors.
Still, it meant we were able to watch everyone and everything coming and going, and it didn't spoil our evening.
One of the unusual things about Theos is that patrons are positively encouraged to bring their own wine, which can certainly save a bob or two.
But even if you turn up empty handed, there is a good range of popular brands, canned beers and non-alcoholic drinks on sale.
For our starters, Sue went for keftades, which are lamb and beef meat balls, and I had some very tasty dolmades – stuffed vine leaves.
Both were served on a bed of lettuce, onion, tomatoes and cucumber, and at just under a fiver are what you would expect to pay.
For the main course, Sue had a traditional lamb kleftico, which fell off the bone, with carrots and a delicious sauce.
I chose afelia – pork medallions in a red wine and cinnamon marinade with button mushrooms.
Both were served with a simple bowl of rice, salad and a spiced boiled potato.
While the lamb was tender and tasty the pork was a little on the dry side.
One of the delights of Theos is the hospitality and the host seems to enjoy nothing better than getting out of the kitchen and mixing with his guests.
We rose to the occasion and were rewarded with the shot of Greek brandy.
The desert menu was rather more international than Greek national so we ended up with chocolate fudge cake and ice cream, and a slightly waxy American cheesecake.
By-passing the coffees, we quietly finished our Shiraz and relaxed to the dulcet tones of bouzouki music.
Greek food isn't something I want too often but at Theos it is plentiful, by and large authentic, flavoursome and not too expensive.
The restaurant was full on the Friday we turned up, which I suppose says it all.
When the alterations and extensions are complete, it is sure to be a hit – the smells alone bring back memories of holidays in the sun. But be sure to book to avoid disappointment.
Main courses are just under £15 and deserts about £5 making our total bill, without the wine, a shade under £50.
