I ALSO remember St Patrick's Church in Well Lane, Halifax ("Room in a mill dedicated to St Patrick", Nostalgia, September 4); my sisters and I went there every Sunday.

I also know about the Talbot pub ("Chapel at the old Talbot Inn", September 4); it was on the corner from our house at 5, The Square, Woolshops, where Mothercare used to be.

Mr and Mr and Mrs Holmes and their daughter, Betty, had the pub for a number of years.

Across from our house was the abattoir. We all went to St Joseph's School, my five sisters and two brothers.

On Monday mornings Father Backhouse would come to check who had not attended at St Patrick's on the Sunday. If it was any of the boys he would take hold of a lock of hair and pull him to the front of the class.

We also went sledging in the winter on Duffy's Park.

Happy days!

M Skinner
