MATTY Crouch celebrated getting back in the swing with an impressive victory in Saturday's Ogden Cup, highlight of the Open Week at Halifax Golf Club.
Ten handicapper Crouch only started playing again in the last month after a break since last Autumn but showed few signs of rustiness and plenty of stamina to hold it together over 36 holes in pleasant conditions.
The host club player followed his "warm up" round in the morning of 68 with a superb afternoon round of 65 to lift the cup with a total of 133.
He was two shots clear of Alan Slingsby, who produced a remarkable effort considering he has an official handicap of 19, but was restricted to 15 in this competition. He returned sub par rounds of 68 and 67.
In third place was former Halifax member Mark Stephenson, who used his local knowledge well.
Host club vice captain David Peel, allowed to use a buggy after a recent knee operation, was the leader after the first round but was unable to maintain his challenge in the afternoon sun.
The Union's junior team boss Frank Greaves (West End) took the elite players' prize with rounds of 71 and 69 to pip Fixby's Richard Broadley.
