THE FAST emerging Halifax and Huddersfield Union junior side bounced back from defeat in their opening Inter Union fixture at Harrogate to stun East Riding.
The trip to the unfamiliar surroundings of the home side's chosen venue of Allerthorpe Park GC held no fears as the Union side chalked up a crushing 28-8 triumph, the biggest win under current junior chief Frank Greaves' tenure.
"It was an unbelievable result and a match played in great spirit and team ethos," said Greaves.
"Everyone contributed and having endured nail biting victories last year, to win by more than four points gives us a huge amount of confidence."
Young Crow Nest Park talent Nathan Scott was in particularly eyecatching form in both those opening fixtures, seeing off the highly rated Curtis Wilding of Oakdale GC 5&4 in his singles match against Harrogate, and following it up with a 4&3 victory over Matthew Ombler of Ganstead Park in the win over East Riding.
But Greaves was loathe to single out any individuals after a great team performance in that East Riding match and is optimistic the confidence gained will see them make a real tilt for the top regions of the table as the season unfolds and the weather improves.
It was perhaps no great surprise that the trip to Ripon City GC to face Harrogate ended in defeat, given the fact that the hosts have been champions for the last two years and the visitors went into the fixture without four key players.
The morning foursomes were played in atrocious conditions with snow and hail and a strong, biting wind, and though Stephen Pullen and Ben Simpson clawed back a big deficit for a debut win, Halifax/Huddersfield were 8-4 down going into the singles.
West End's Ryan Greenwood looked set to give the visitors a flying start in the singles as he played superbly against England under 16 squad member Josh Bassitt on the Harrogate man's own course.
Greenwood looked set to go three up on 14 only for Bassitt to pull out a birdie, halve the hole, and go on to win the match.
Scott's win temporarily raised spirits and though Adam Cryer, Ben Simpson and Sam Town defied the bitter cold to earn narrow late wins and praise from Greaves for their fighting spirit, it was not enough.
But that disappointment was forgotten with that glorious triumph over East Riding.
With the return of Sam Bridges, Jamie Bower, Matthew Colcombe and Joe Hill, Greaves was hopeful beforehand and his optimism proved well placed as on a sodden course, they won five of the six foursomes and earned a moral victory in the sixth as Michael Lawrie and Adam Cryer came back from four down with seven to go to halve the match.
The rain at last relented as the singles began and though there were a few early jitters, Bridges held off a recovery from England and Yorkshire under 16 player Michael Helyard to win two up and Greenwood stormed back to halve with Paul Lockwood.
Colclough won very well and though Joe Hill had to settle for a half after looking in command, Scott's win over Ombler sealed victory.
Subsequent wins by Cryer, Bower, Pullen and current order of merit leader Simpson merely added the icing on the cake and put the squad in great heart for the next clash against Bradford next month.
