THE unforgiving Fixby course has been the downfall of many a fine player, but it could just be the venue that yields silverware for the Halifax and Huddersfield Union on Sunday.
The Huddersfield club hosts the the 35th annual Inter Union team championship, and the local Union's non-playing captain Chris Mear is optimistic home advantage and the quality of his own players will see them lift the trophy.
"Earlier in the seas
on I was not so hopeful but all the players have come into some really good form in the last few weeks so I'm very hopeful," he said.
Mear switched the venue of the pre season Union trial match to Fixby to ensure all his side had a run out over the course, and he is hopeful that will pay dividends on Sunday.
And he will be looking to Richard Broadley, who has been drawn in the first threeball of the day, to get his side off to a flying start.
Broadley, who last week retained his Union Individual Matchplay crown, is right back to his imperious best form, and Andy Shaw of Bradley Hall has hit similar rich vein.
Following them are the experienced trio of Iain Powell, Graham McLean and Frank Greaves, with Greaves' young West End colleague Sam Bridges bringing up the rear.
And, with fellow West End youngster Ryan Greenwood first reserve, few would argue that the home side have a realistic chance of glory.
Any support will be welcome with the action starting at 8am.
