THERE were emotional scenes at Halifax Golf Club on Sunday evening as Clive Crawshaw lifted the Captain's Prize in the same week his father and fellow member John passed away after a short illness at the age of 65.
The poignant victory was a fitting tribute to a man who was held in great esteem by everyone connected with Calderdale golf, and tributes flooded in for a man whose talents on the course were matched only by the affection with which he was held off it.

Current Halifax and Huddersfield Union president Steve Wild, who is a member at Halifax GC, John's home club, said he was not only a wonderful golfer but also a wonderful person.

"John was an absolute gentleman who was held in very high regard by everyone at the club and at the Union," he said.

And Union secretary John Lawrence said he would be remembered with great affection by all who knew him.

"We are very proud of his record and the many title he won," he said.

"John was a stalwart for the Union for many years and his loss has been met with great sadness."

A Yorkshire county player for many years, John also represented the Halifax and Huddersfield Union on many occasions and was a past president of the organisation.

Originally a member at Dewsbury where his father was club professional, he later joined Halifax GC and was a member for many years and a past captain at Ogden, and helped the club to a succession of honours.

A trade quality manager for the Tetley brewery in Leeds, he leaves a wife Margaret, two children and three grandchildren and lived in Mirfield. The funeral was yesterday at Dewsbury Moor Crematorium.
