Saxton's joy as he sees off Jim's charge

EARLY starter Ian Saxton had a long, long wait before finding out whether he had got his hands on the Page Trophy.
And the long time clubhouse leader had to sit tight as a tremendous late effort by Bradley Hall's seasoned campaigner Jim Fairhurst almost saw him surge through the field to threaten that top spot.
But Saxton had just done enough and as the grey evening skies began to darken, he was finally confirmed as winner of the Halifax and Huddersfield's Alliance's flagship 36 hole event.
The Meltham eight handicapper coupled a scorching morning net 66 with a second round net 69 to claim the victory spoils by a two shot margin from Bradley Park man Mick O'Hara who posted a two round net 137 to bag the runners up spot by a shot from Castlefields man Jim Sykes.
However, there was a touch of drama about the latter stages of the competition as Union stalwart Fairhurst produced a remarkable second round performance.
A first round net 75 had put him well down the field, but despite a stiffening breeze and the odd squally shower which made conditions more difficult later in the day, he pieced together an amazing run on his second 18 holes.
And the Bradley Hall ace described how a seemingly routine putt on the first green at the start of his second round transformed his fortunes.
"I had been hitting the ball sweetly all day but the putts just weren't dropping," he said.
"Then I had a four footer for a birdie on the first hole in the afternoon and I said to my playing partners 'If this drops, they'll all go in for the rest of the round' and so it proved."
Fairhurst followed that birdie with an eagle on the third then bagged five more birdies in a magnificent gross 65, which was not quite enough to overhaul those top three but unsurprisingly won him the fine consolation of best gross prize by some distance.
The one handicapper's net 64 was also the best net second round score with Jonny Heyes taking the prize for best first round score as he also carded a net 64.
Jamie Coverley of Bradley Park shared the professionals' prize with David Astin.
