Being consistent out of bunkers is not as daunting as it seems. There are three things to remember - correct set up, proper technique and a consistent point of entry.
You should use a sand wedge when playing short sand shots around the green. They vary in loft from 54 to 58 degrees and have "bounce" on them which prevents the club digging in to the sand.
When setting up for your shot in a bunker you should align your club face at the target whilst aiming your feet, hips and shoulders left of the target. The ball should be just inside your left heel (right handed golfers) This will help you attack the ball from the correct angle and promote an initial high ball flight. The face of the club should be slightly open The start of the back swing should be straight back or slightly outside the target line and aim to enter the sand about two inches behind the ball.
Try to make contact with the sand first and slide the club face under the ball allowing a cushion of sand to lift the ball out
