EUROPE may have failed at Valhalla, but they were triumphant in the Walshaw Cup, Crow Nest Park's equivalent of the big transatlantic clash which has been staged to coincide with the Ryder Cup since 1999.
The competition sees a 'European' team take on a 'USA' team in identical format and the former won by a convincing 22-18 margin.
Europe won the Friday morning Foursomes 5.5 to 2.5, but the US bounced back in the afternoon Betterballs 5-3 and won the Saturday morning Betterballs 5.5 to 2.5 to give them an overall two point lead.
But it all changed in the Saturday afternoon Singles as the Europeans triumphed 11-5 and earned a resounding win to delight European captain Mick Ashton and his team, for whom Martin Henry, who earned maximum points, Alan Stafford and Duncan Lambert were outstanding.
'USA' captain Nicky Day was left to applaud good performances by Paul Fennelly, Mick Greenberry and Andy Mitchell.
It was a great day with organiser Mike Walton thanking all who assisted, and it was especially memorable for club professional Paul Everitt who found the water at a par three then put his next tee shot in the hole.
