THE Halifax/Huddersfield Union side overcame a semi-waterlogged Bradley Park course to earn a battling 20-16 success in their Inter-District clash with Harrogate.
The match was in doubt after torrential overnight rain left some of the bunkers flooded while there was also standing water on other areas of the course.
Non-playing captain Chris Mear and Harrogate team captain Ian Smith agreed to play although implemented two local rules for the day - to lift clean and place through the green, and secondly, any bunkers that were flooded and relief could not be taken within the bunker, then it could be taken outside.
The foursomes started well with top pairing Richard Broadley and Andy Shaw opening up a two hole lead, which they kept throughout to win 3&2.
The West End pair of Sam Bridges and Ryan Greenwood endured a much closer game until running out one hole winners.
The experienced pairing of Frank Greaves and Graham McLean also had a close encounter before winning on the last hole.
However, the pairings of Andy Appleyard and Jared Ellison, Todmorden's David Stafford, on his debut, and Matthew Colcombe, Ben Crowther and Jamie Bower all lost their matches, leaving the game delicately balanced at 6-6.
With the course slowly drying out ahead of the afternoon singles, the scene was set for a close finish.
Broadley was first out against Steve Whitwham of Harrogate GC. The match was level after eight holes, but Broadley then lost three on the trot and never recovered, losing 3&2.
Shaw outplayed his opponent, Phil Kitching, winning 6&5 while Greenwood played exceptionally well to win his match on the last hole.
His West End clubmate, Bridges found himself in a winning position of three up after 11 holes, and was always in control to win 3&2.
McLean was unlucky to lose to a last hole birdie, when Ian Douglas of Pannal played two towering shots up the par five 18th.
Greaves produced yet another gritty performance to win his match 4&3 as Halifax, Huddersfield opened up a 12-8 lead.
The outcome was thrown back into the melting pot with losses for Appleyard, Colcombe, and Ellison meaning Harrogate were now in front at 14-12.
Fifteen-year-old Meltham player Bower put things back on track by winning his match 6&5 to tie things up at 14-14.
Stafford was all square playing 16 and a solid par won him the hole. He followed that up with two pars to win, leaving Crowther one up playing 16.
He holed an eight foot putt to stay one up, then played solidly to the middle of the green on the 17th while opponent Darren Brown needed a free drop from a flower bed.
Brown played a great recovery shot to about eight feet, and after Crowther saw his birdie putt race four feet past, Brown holed and Crowther followed him in.
That meant the hole was decided on Dormie which gave Halifax/Huddersfield the win, Crowther finishing off with a solid par on 18.
