HEAVY overnight rain delayed the start of the Halifax and Huddersfield Union's traditional season closing fixture against St Annes Old Links at Halifax GC on Sunday.
The action eventually got under way at 11am with foursomes having to be dispensed with and only the fourballs taking place, but it did not distract the home side who registered a 4-2 win which with the 7.5-4.5 advantage they held from the return fixt
ure on the Fylde coast in April, meant they completed an 11.5-6.5 aggregate victory.
There were some notable performances from the Union side, particularly from last minute stand in Tony Bower of Meltham, the 14 handicapper playing superbly as he and Clive Crawshaw, son of the recently deceased Ogden stalwart John, earned an impressive 5 & 4 win.
However, the result was not the main thing on an entertaining and friendly afternoon's golf, and both sides are already looking forward to next year when this historic fixture will take place for the 63rd time.
As usual, the sides meet at St Annes first, with this clash fixed for Sunday, April 26, 2009, with the return at Meltham on Sunday, October 4.
