THESE are the first drawings of how the Square Chapel and Piece Hall could be linked under ambitious £4 million proposals to expand the arts centre.
The transformation will join the two listed buildings via a triangular copper and glass atrium if Calderdale Council gives the plan the go ahead.

A new 100-seat theatre, public sun terrace and continental cafe-bar with art gallery would also be created.

Linda Franklin, Square Chapel general manager, said: "It's incredibly exciting to finally have the plans submitted.

"There's still a long way to go but we're keeping our fingers crossed the council likes what it sees and we can press on."

The development would include knocking through the south wall of the Piece Hall to create a new entrance into the expanded Square Chapel.

Funding is expected to come from Yorkshire Forward, Arts Council Yorkshire and Calderdale Council.

Mrs Franklin said: "This will not only create a marvellous new gateway to Halifax for people arriving from the train station, it will also really bring the Piece Hall bang into the centre of cultural life – which is exactly where it needs to be."

A decision on the plans could be made within the next three months.

If they are approved it is hoped work on the development will begin in 2010.

Can't something be achieved without knocking down part of the wall of the Piece Hall? Why damage a rather beautiful listed building for what looks (from the artist's impression) like an old fashioned air raid shelter?

Should be the Jewel in the Crown............

On main land Europe, anything even close to this would be a hive of bars, bistros and craft shops etc etc....

Why go to all the additional expense when there is already an entrance adjacent to the information office accessed from the cobbled raod between the hotel and the boundry of Square Chapel and the Piece Hall. This can also be made into a covered walkway.
I wrote all this in a comment when proposal was first muted.
Calderdale Council take note you are not spending our money wisely.

Complete waste of time and money. How is this going to bring investment into Halifax.

I do not get this idea of combining modern architcture with traditional. It never works.

Ori Bule - did you think that Callderdale read these comments? Surely not.

Persnally, I think they should turn it all into a bowling alley, bingo hall and charity shopping arcade.
