Fantastic chance to link railway station with Halifax town centre

The proposed plan for what was known as the Piece Hall Renaissance area has been divided.
It means there are now two major developments to consider.
One is the area around Halifax Railway Station and Eureka children's museum. Negotiations still have to continue between the two main parties with interest in the main pieces of land - Calderdale Council and Eureka - and there are some complex issues but the potential is fantastic.
There is a great desire for Halifax to have a better railway station and this must be seen as a chance to achieve that.
But imagine the impact if people arriving by train stepped out of the station and felt they were immediately in the town centre. This could be done by developing the Eureka car park to the right of the bridge.
That would bring a more dramatic change to the town than even the Broad Street scheme. The quality of any new buildings would have to be absolute top grade. Four main aims will have to be satisfied.
The new development needs to provide an inspiring first impression of Halifax for people arriving by rail.
The land is close to Halifax Parish Church and Eureka and must bring out the best of those two buildings.
It must to link the station with the town and particularly the Piece Hall, taking people over Winding Road.
The scheme has to incorporate car parking - for the station and Eureka, although there is more land on the other side of the museum which could also be considered.
Getting people over Winding Road is a challenge - but one that modern day designers should relish.
Some people have praised the way Sheffield has developed its land between its railway station and the city centre. Exciting features help guide visitors across a road much busier and wider than the one in Halifax and is a great example of what can be done.
But the key to this issue could be how the railway side of the Halifax development links to the changes made on the other side of the road.
