The proposed plan for what was known as the Piece Hall Renaissance area has been divided.
It means there are now two major developments to consider.
One is the area around Halifax Railway Station and Eureka children's museum. Negotiations still have to continue between the two main parties with interest in the main pieces of land - Calderdale Council and Eureka - and there are some complex issues but the potential is fantastic.
There is a great desire for Halifax to have a better railway station and this must be seen as a chance to achieve that.
But imagine the impact if people arriving by train stepped out of the station and felt they were immediately in the town centre. This could be done by developing the Eureka car park to the right of the bridge.
That would bring a more dramatic change to the town than even the Broad Street scheme. The quality of any new buildings would have to be absolute top grade. Four main aims will have to be satisfied.
The new development needs to provide an inspiring first impression of Halifax for people arriving by rail.
The land is close to Halifax Parish Church and Eureka and must bring out the best of those two buildings.
It must to link the station with the town and particularly the Piece Hall, taking people over Winding Road.
The scheme has to incorporate car parking - for the station and Eureka, although there is more land on the other side of the museum which could also be considered.

Getting people over Winding Road is a challenge - but one that modern day designers should relish.
Some people have praised the way Sheffield has developed its land between its railway station and the city centre. Exciting features help guide visitors across a road much busier and wider than the one in Halifax and is a great example of what can be done.
But the key to this issue could be how the railway side of the Halifax development links to the changes made on the other side of the road.

Feel free to comment below but you can also email me your thoughts and suggestions on john.kenealy@halifaxcourier.co.uk and I will publish them on this site.

We are a community interest company forming a National Collection of Pipe Organs and have been offered the possibility of utilizing the redundant All Souls Church in Boothtown. The Project aims to bring together the old and the new in an exciting venture by providing cutting edge computer facilities for music making and composition,( A similar scheme operates in the new Sage building in Gateshead),while making the pipe organs available to the public. All Souls will be suitable for the smaller instruments but the larger ones would obscure the features of the place which is in the care of the Churches Conservation Trust. We have been looking at the possibility of placing a structure of the same design as the Westgate Canopy on the existing foundations of the demolished Square Church. This could provide the space to house up to six very large pipe organs, could provide a connection to the Station, the Piece Hall and the Industrial Museum buildings to the side which could be incorporated in the scheme and provide a large performance space alongside the Square chapel adding to the facilities in this Cultural Quarter. The building is directly below and in line with Westgate and such a structure would bring a coherence to the proposed development of this site and the town centre as a whole and they could even be joined in some way to produce a covered walkway from the Station to Westgate, via the Piece Hall either through it or running alongside the wall between the Square Chapel Arts Centre and the Spire of the Old Church, which would resume its place in the structure of the building. The light thrown up from this glass structure would illuminate the spire and the buildings around it. We also propose to produce a lighting scheme for All Souls in its commanding and beautiful position above Dean Clough. We intend to support as many local community projects as possible in the scheme.Adam Ben Sun,3 St James Court,Halifax hx1 1yp,01422 264 079/07792 033 889

JAMES NIGHTINGALE,

I have recently setup a petition on Number 10 website, raising the need for a new railway station for Halifax.

The reason for this is that Millions of pounds are available for transport infrastructure for Yorkshire and the Humber, and nearly all of this is being spent on Leeds Railway Station.

I am 100% in favour of seeing city stations being modernised, though I think it's well over due, that Halifax should now have a Railway Station fit for purpose.

For those whom aren't convinced that the railway station can happen, if we all decided on this, then no-one would fight for the right to see a modernised station and asa such I have provided the link to my petition on number10 website below.

Please sign this petition, as once we receive 200 signature or more, we will all receive a reply from the Government.
