FINAL plans for a multi-screen cinema in Halifax, a bowling alley, shops, flats and a 429-space car park have been put to the council.
The multi-million scheme to create what will be known as Broad Street Plaza will be a huge boost to the whole of Calderdale.
Council leader Ann McAllister said: "Many people will say this has been a long time coming.
"But I'm delighted we are now pressing ahead, thanks to the concerted efforts of council officers and councillors. It's fantastic news.
"It will provide Halifax with the modern leisure and shopping facilities it desperately needs."
Councillor McAllister (Con, Rastrick) said everyone involved would continue to drive the scheme forward.
Developers Miller Gregory (Halifax) Ltd want to create the complex on the site of the Broad Street car park, immediately opposite the town hall and bus station.
The multi-screen cinema will be operated by Vue Entertainments, one of the country's leading chains, with 62 cinemas nationwide. Ten Pin Limited will run the 26,000 square foot bowling alley.
Also planned are a bingo hall and 106 apartments. Richard Tovey, of Miller Gregory, said: "We are delighted to attract such a high-quality cinema operator. It gives the project tremendous credibility.
"This is in addition to securing one of the leading ten-pin operators who will be running a 26,000 sq ft bowling alley."
Miller Gregory is also talking to national restaurant chains which will open outlets in the plaza.
"The submission of the detailed design shows that the project is moving at full speed," said Mr Tovey. "We remain committed to delivering this project, following years of tremendous hard work in pulling the complex design issues together."
The design includes improved pedestrian links between the town centre and Dean Clough, with enhanced historic routes through Northgate and Orange Street. Traffic-calming measures are planned for Broad Street.
The application is expected to be considered by the planning committee in the early spring.

Is traffic not congested enough around that area. Also, many shops around halifax lay empty and no doubt the half decent shops we do have will move to the complex!!

Isn't the traffic light system that stops traffic dead 4 times between Dews Garage and Bull Green roundabout traffic calming enough ?
