HALIFAX have signed Harlequins' utility player Dwayne Barker for next season.
The 24 year old, who has made 10 Super League appearances for the Londoners in 2008, penned a one year deal last night and is effectively a replacement for Richard Varkulis, who has opted to join Widnes.
Like Varkulis, Barker primarily covers the back row and centre spots, although the former Leeds junior - who was a regular in the both the Hull KR and Castleford sides that won the National League One title in 2006 and 2007 respectively - is also capable of slotting in at stand off.
"Dwayne played for Martin (Hall) at Hull KR and he comes highly recommended by Brian McDermott down at Quins," said Fax boss Matt Calland. "He's played quite a few Super League games for them this year and I know Brian thinks he will kill it back in the National League.
"He is a big kid, about 16 stone, and is very, very skilful.
"He's got a great pass to either side, which is a pretty rare quality these days, and I think he will complement our style pretty well.
"He can play in a lot of different positions and we will have to wait and see where he fits into our team.
"Wherever it is, it will be somewhere where he can get his hands on the ball a lot because he's the kind of player you want to be involved."
Barker, a former Milford amateur, is Fax's second new recruit after Widnes playmaker Bob Beswick.
And there could be at least one more incoming before the weekend, with Courier Sport understanding that the club are close to concluding a deal with another Super League forward.
"There is a lot of hard work going on behind the scenes," said chief executive Graham Clay.
