HALIFAX have signed a second forward from Bradford Bulls, snapping up reserve prop Neil Cherryholme on a permanent contract.
Cherryholme, the reigning Bulls' Reserve Player of the Year, will join Odsal teammate Matt James, who has agreed a season-long loan deal, at the Shay in 2009.
The 21 year old put pen to paper last night, rounding off a busy evening that also saw injury-plagued hooker Mick Govin and BARLA under 23 international Graham Charlesworth commit themselves to the club for next year.
"Neil is what we are looking for in the front row," said Calland.
"He's young, he comes with a good recommendation from Bradford - he's been the coach's Player of the Year for the last two seasons - and has a very good attitude.
"He's certainly got some size, at six foot four and 110 kilos they don't come much bigger, and he's a real workhorse.
"Everyone knows we struggled at times in that area this year but I think we will have a much better looking pack next season."
Govin's re-signing may raise a few eyebrows after just 15 appearances in two seasons at the Shay, but Calland is convinced the 23 year old playmaker's obvious talent outweighs the risk presented by three shoulder reconstructions.
"Mick's deal is highly incentive-based but I'm very happy that he's staying because he gives us so many options at six, seven, nine and 13," said Calland.
"Anyone who has seen him play will agree he lights up the pitch when he is on it.
"The problem is keeping him on it and keeping him injury free.
"He will get a full pre season under his belt and we will all keep our fingers crossed for him."
Charlesworth's recruitment finally presents the 22 year old, the top try scorer in the Pennine League in 2007/8, with a sought after professional contract.
The slightly-built Halifax Irish back won Calland over with a scorching touchdown in Fax's reserve semi final at Leigh earlier this month.
"I don't think anyone else on the field would have scored that try," said Calland.
"Graham's got lightning pace, quick feet and the ball is in his court in terms of how he develops."
WIDNES have signed St Helens' reserve prop Sam Thompson on a two year contract.
