HALIFAX boss Matt Calland watched his side cruise into top spot in National League One yesterday afternoon, then insisted: "We are still getting better."
Fax leapfrogged Salford at the top of the ladder with a supremely comfortable 38-14 win over Whitehaven, the side that beat them four times out of five in 2007, to set up a mouthwatering top two meeting at the Willows on Friday night.

But Calland, who watched returning back rower Paul Smith and 20 year old Wigan loanee Mark Flanagan bag two tries each - was refusing to get carried away.

"We've not talked about the table, we've not looked at the table," said the former England threequarter, who rested veteran forwards David Larder and David Wrench.

"We still have a lot of improvement in us, even if we are top.

"There's always stuff for us to be working on.

"We are top of the ladder, but if you went on the points against we wouldn't be top, would we?

"We know we are going to score points.

"We are averaging 39 points a game in the league, the lowest we have scored was 18 at Celtic in awful conditions.

"It's how many we concede that will decide our season."

Fax certainly took a step in the right direction in that department against Ged Stokes' Cumbrians, limiting their visitors to just three scores.

"We've worked really hard on our defence all week and it paid off for us," said Calland.

"They completed at 85 per cent in the first half and never looked like scoring."

"We overplayed at times and our ball control was well down, but the boys really aimed up and our goal line defence in particular was really good."

As expected, Calland handed home debuts to Flanagan's fellow Warrior Thomas Coyle and Harlequins' young prop Joe Walsh.

"I thought Coyle went really well, Flanagan was awesome and Joe Walsh has such a good engine, he never stops," said Calland.

LOOSE forward Andy Bowman bagged a hat trick of tries as Halifax's second string beat Hunslet 40-18 at the Shay on Saturday.

The Hawks took an early lead, but Bowman's first try, goaled by Martyn Silcox, put Karl Fairbank's side 6-4 ahead.

Hunslet scored again for 8-6, but Chris Holroyde's touchdown just before the break made it 10-8.
It was one way traffic after the interval, with Scott Caley and Bowman both scoring and Silcox kicking his side into a 22-8 lead.

Shaun Garrod, Bowman, Holroyde and Graham Charlesworth all scored, with Charlesworth also kicking a conversion.
